Aromatic Hvar: All Roads Lead to the Lavender Festival in Velo Grablje

By 19 June 2017

People often ask me what is my favourite time of year to be on Hvar.

Honestly speaking, there is never a bad moment, but peak, peak season and the first week of January are my least favourites, for differing reasons.

The times I most look forward to? Easter in Jelsa, May, the month when Hvar shines in all its Spring glory, September, after the season.

And the weeks of lavender in June and early July.

Velo Grablje 2017, home of the 9th Lavender Festival, an incredible achievement for a small village which had just five inhabitants when the festival started. There are 14 today.

It was the centre of lavender production for all Dalmatia, back in the day. Today, however, Velo Grablje plays a very different role - a story of a village reborn, a stunning inland village away from the party on the coast, and one of the most energising places in Dalmatia.

This year's lavender festival takes place on June 30 and July 1. Don't miss it.
