Another year of the wonderful Kino Mediteran project in Korčula open-air cinema.
Kino Mediteran (Mediterranean Cinema) is the project of cinema revival in Dalmatia, which aims to renew movie theaters and bring screenings to smaller towns in Dalmatia where cinemas have been closed for a long time. The project takes place in 25 towns in Dalmatia, and while some of them have year-long screenings of various movies, most of them enjoy just the summer program - which is understandable as most of their projections take place in the open-air cinemas.
Kino Mediteran offers to the local population an insight into the high-quality movies of European and world cinematography, and some of the most interesting titles of the Croatian cinematography. Since no other cultural summer project of the host towns offered a movie programme, Kino Mediteran contributed grreatly to the development of Dalmatian cultural tourism. Another important aspect of this program is the fact that all movies have bilingual subtitles (Croatian and English) during the summer performances, what makes the films accessible to the foreign visitors as well. And that paid off, as the program organizers estimate that almost one third of all visitors at their projections are foreign guests during the summer season.
In Korčula during 2018 summer season 5 projections will be held.
First, on Saturday August 4th, a documentary about the legendary Dalmatian writer and journalist, Momčilo Popadić titled "Pope, vrati se" will be shown.
On Sunday, August 5th, you'll be able to see an Italian rom-com "Il Colore Nascosto Delle Cose".
One week after that, on Saturday the 11th, Spanish Basque-language drama "Handia" will be shown.
On Sunday, August 12th, a Turkish film "Kelebekler" which is hard to put into a category as it is a drama and an absurdist comedy and a tragedy all at once, will be shown.
Last movie of this year's program will be shown on Saturday, August 18th, and it will be a Croatian comedy "Osmi povjerenik", made after a bestselling book by Renato Baretić.
Kino Mediteran is an event not to be missed for many each year. The atmosphere of an open-air cinema is always special, you can bring your own booze, snacks, there's just a greater sense of freedom than you would feel in a conventional movie theatre. And maybe, just maybe, you will be able to meet one of the previous Croatian Pets of the Month taking a nap during the movie...
