Learn the Legends of Korčula: Forbidden Love of Smokvica

By 25 May 2018

Korčula is a magical island full of tradition and thousands of years of history, and so it is not surprising, perhaps, that there are quite a few legends associated with the island. True or not, we will leave that to you to decide.

A few years ago, I made my first visit to Korčula, filming a series called Legends of Croatia, reenacting all the legends of Sibenik-Knin and Dubrovnik-Neretva County. We spent a magical couple of days on the island, and the response of local people was magnificent, as they dressed up in their finest traditional clothes to act out the legends that had been handed down to them by their ancestors.

There were four legends in total, and we will be looking at each one over the next few weeks.

Dolphins are a common site around Korčula, but have you ever seen a mermaid?

Local boy Antonio did, and he fell in love. With such a romantic setting as the deep bay of Istruga near Brna, how could he fail to fall for a stunning mermaid.

But not everyone was happy with their relationship. Learn more about the legend of the Forbidden Love of Smokvica.
