Neum – Klek Border Crossing
Travelling from Split to Dubrovnik doesn’t seem to be tricky and long trip when one checks the map. But it might be smart to check some information before you head to Dubrovnik without the water bottle in your car, cause hey it’s a stone’s throw away from Split, no? Well…
Republic of Croatia is divided into two parts by Neum, a small town situated along Bosnia and Herzegovina’s 20 km of coastline providing a neighboring country with the only access to the Adriatic Sea.
You are required to show your valid passport for passport checks at the border, even though it is very unlikely your passport will be stamped. During the busy summer months, traffic jams are quite common here.
In an effort to connect these two separate parts and create a contiguous territory, Croatian government has been promising a construction of $300 million bridge to the Peljesac peninsula but due to the high expenses and environmental arguments this has been postponed.
For those interested in the historical facts, in 1699 Republic of Dubrovnik gave the Neum region to the Ottoman Empire that conquered Bosnia at the time. Skilled diplomats of Republic of Dubrovnik gave away this small region in order to create a buffer zone with Venetian Republic, its biggest rival, that occupied Dalmatia at the time.
Ivanica – Gornji Brgat Border Crossing
The border crossing between Trebinje and Dubrovnik, that is Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, is a small one so make sure you stop for a regular passport check, or sometimes verification of all documents and car checking.
At the height of the season traffic jams are quite common due to the poor organization and verification of the documents that can take time.
Debeli Brijeg – Karasovići Border Crossing
This border crossing between Montenegro and Croatia can be quite busy during the summer season, so be prepared for lengthy delays, traffic jams and tailbacks. Keep in mind that it could be easier to cross the border in the morning and early afternoon.
Prepare your valid passports for regular passport checks. If you are crossing the border with your rental car, do not forget to have your original vehicle registration papers as well as an internationally recognized insurance certificate (green card) or you can purchase minimal frontier insurance for €15 valid for 15 days.
