Konavle Valley

Konavle Valley is a narrow field located between the Snijeznica mountain and the Adriatic Sea, 20 km from Dubrovnik. The Snijeznica peak St. Elias (Sveti Ilija) is the highest point of Dubrovnik-Neretva Country at 1234 meters of altitude and it is a popular place for hiking and climbing. It is relatively easy to climb and it usually take a day or half day effort. There are two routes to the top: one route starts from the village of Mihanici in Konavle field to the highest village in the country, Kuna situated at 700 meters above sea land. You can also come by car to to Kuna and hike for 2 hours to reach the peak of Snijeznica. Along the way, hikers will find old stony roads dating back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire and old military roads known as “mulitjere”, a name derived from the “mula” word that translates as mule in English.
Land in Konavle is one of the most fertile lands in Croatia thanks to the abundance of fresh water from rivers Ljuta, Konavočica and Kopačica and the area is famous for high quality homemade products: cheese, smoked ham, dry figs, olive oil, herb brandy (rakija) and wines.

Don’t forget to pay attention to the traditional costumes of Konavle, especially the women’s costumes. The most known embroidery in the county comes from Konavle where the strictly symmetrical and geometrical motives are mostly worked out in red, black, and dark green color with a golden-yellow border.
