Dubrovnik in History

Dubrovnik in History: On the Street in 1941

Every time I see vintage photos of Dubrovnik, I marvel at the empty walls and the streets dotted only with locals in passing. It's a fascinating concept, taking this Adriatic gem out of the tourist context that's drilled into out collective conscience these days, and traveling back in time to a point where you can feel the city breathing quietly.

Here's a selection of photos dating back to 1941 when they were taken by an Italian army photographer. Whether or not these are great moments in the history of our nation is subjective, but the images nevertheless represent a valuable source of information, providing insight into the city life unperturbed by filming crews and hordes of visitors.
