Easter Workshops at Lazareti

DEŠA is a non-governmental organization (NGO) which has been active in Dubrovnik since Homeland War in 1991, and it was founded and registered formally in 1993. Its main target was to help and support women, victims of the war and their families to cope with difficult situation in which they found themselves because of the war. This year the organization of civil society that works on sustainable social, economic, cultural and environmental strengthening and building of the community, organizes Easter workshops at Lazareti starting from Tuesday, April 4.

The participants will learn how to create Easter braid palms, olive branches, how to paint Easter eggs with a traditional method known as “penganje” with beeswax, pins, eggs and of course a lot of talent and patience in order to create these little artworks. While wax is being melted, the participants are expected to write words and messages as well as draw motives with pins onto the eggs.

People in Dubrovnik are very proud of this tradition and the aim of these workshops organized by DEŠA is to revive the traditional methods of craft making.
Color needed for coloring or “pengati” eggs is derived from the shells of red onions boiled in the water until the water turns reddish-brown. Sometimes, beetroot and wine are added to the color in order to improve the quality of the color. In the same water with added salt and a splash of vinegar, the eggs are further cooked for 15 minutes until they get hard boiled. During this procedure, the previously applied excess wax melts around the written message or painted motive with a pin.

In addition to “penganje” traditional method, participants will be introduced to the decoupage technique of decorating the eggs. Napkin decoupage is much simpler method of egg decoration where usually the flower motive napkins are used.
You can simply cut out your preferred patterns, but try to be neat and avoid wrinkles in order to glue it perfectly to the egg.

Easter braid palms and olive branches workshops are scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday, April 4 and 6 from 10:30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. Painting and decoupage eggs decorating workshops are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, April 11 and 12, from 10:30 to 12:30 p.m.
