Medvednica is a mountain and nature park situated just north of Zagreb and its highest peak is Sljeme, at 1,035 m. Even though it’s called “Bear Mountain”, there are unfortunately no bears left on it. Traces of human settlements found here point to the fact that humans lived here even in prehistoric times.   Medvedgrad, a medieval fortress which has been here since the 13th ct has inspired many legends, the most famous one being about an evil Black Queen and her well.
