The Ultimate Croatian Capital: Photographer Imagines a Blend of Zagreb and Split

By 30 April 2017

Have you ever tried to imagine what Zagreb would look like if it were situated on the coast? As the saying goes, whichever idea you can think of, someone has probably already done it somewhere: in this case, it's the photographer Dario Luka Nikšić, who set out to create the unthinkable blend of Zagreb and Split.

The photo above represents a fusion of two very different Croatian cities, depicting the Jelačić square with its own personal riva, laced with palm trees and beloved Dalmatian benches. Nikšić posted the photo to the Zakaj volim Zagreb Facebook group, saying the job would have been easier if he had two high-quality photos taken from the same perspective to work with, but that he's satisfied with the outcome nonetheless.

As one would expect, the members of the group had a lot to say. The prevailing reaction seems to be "no", followed by comments elaborating why the concept wouldn't work. Once again, us Croats demonstrated how seriously we like to take even the most harmless, amusing displays of creativity. If it weren't for a handful of commenters playfully warning the photographer not to give any ideas to mayor Milan Bandić, one would think people mistook the photo for a rendering of an actual renovation project. Let's lighten up a bit, shall we?
