Have you ever noticed these cute little characters such as one on the image above smiling at you from ads in trams? Accompanied by slogans in Latin such as ignavis sempre feriae sunt (every day's a holiday for the lazy), those tiny toga-clad men are here to spark your interest and invite you to Andautonia – the archaeological park in Šćitarjevo near Zagreb.
To mark the beginning of the season, the park is celebrating its 2017 opening with a manifestation called "Spring in Andautonia" taking place on two consecutive weekends. Sundays of May 14th and May 21st will be jam-packed with attractive activities: visitors can try their hand in ceramics classes, woodworking, and jewellery making workshops, play ancient Roman games, explore the couture of the classical age and taste some ancient Roman cuisine. One more thing to check out is an exhibition on Roman scents in the Interpretation centre, followed by an educational lecture on how perfumes were made in the ancient times using available aromatic herbs.
Spring in Andautonia is coinciding with the 2nd Festival of Experimental archaeology that will have scientists present the latest discoveries in experimental research on archaeological heritage.
Well-known Croatian writer, archaeologist and long-term collaborator of the park Rujana Jeger will give two lectures: "Ghenghis Khan and his influence on the modern world", and "The secret history of Mongolian women and queens".
All activities and lectures will be accessible for visitors with disabilities, and a two-way ride from Zagreb is organised twice daily. The park is opened from 12 PM to 6 PM, and the entrance is free for all visitors on both days. Follow the event on Facebook for more updates!
