A delightful exhibition is opening in a few days in the Museum of Arts and Crafts (MUO) in Zagreb: a set of azulejos, painted and tin-glazed ceramic tiles Portugal is known for, has been donated to the museum by the Croatian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. The tiles used to adorn the spaces of the Croatian Embassy in Lisbon and got transferred to Croatia in 2015.
Eleven wonderful panels originating from the 18th century depict maritime motives, pastoral and galant scenes, and are embellished with rocaille and floral ornaments. Painted in a serene combination of blue and white, the tiles are the first artwork of its kind to be introduced into any museum collection in Croatia. After the exhibition, two panels will become a part of MUO's permanent display.
The opening is set for Thursday, May 18th and marks the official visit of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, president of Portugal.
