New City Library to Be Built in Paromlin?

By 9 August 2017

One of the most important monuments of industrial architecture in Zagreb could become home to the state-of-the-art new City Library.

Zagreb City Libraries have launched a petition to find out what the citizens of Zagreb want their new library to look like, Pogledaj.to reported on July 25.

“What kind of City Library would you like? Which services would you like it to include?” are some of the questions you can answer until September 30, 2017.
You can access it here.

The suggested location is Paromlin, one of the most important monuments of industrial architecture in Zagreb. Built in 1907, and one of the first examples of reinforced concrete being used in construction, but, after a fire in 1988, it became neglected and is currently an eyesore. After a part of it collapsed, and another was torn down, the building is in dire need of renovation, and it would be a shame if it was torn down, so repurposing it sounds like a great compromise.

In addition, the building is located near the Main Railway Station, Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall, the City Hall, and other important cultural institution in central Zagreb, so it's a great starting point where various cultural events could take place.

Founded in 1907, the City Library once saved the Stone Gate, and now it wants to save another important cultural institution, built in the same year.

“Parmomlin used to feed the city, Paromlin will continue feeding the city,” the new library programme states.

The new, bigger building would have numerous new services, such as game rooms, multimedia hall, exhibition spaces, and playrooms for children.
