On October 23, 2017, the Rotary club Zagreb Centar ceremoniously awarded scholarships to the 11th generation of scholarship holders from "Gordan Cacic" club fund, which is named after the tragically deceased friend of the club - general of the Croatian Army, reports Poslovni.hr on October 27, 2017.
For this school year, the Rotary Club Zagreb Center has granted scholarships to thirty-one successful students and pupils with a lower income status. Also, for the fifth time, the award "Mitko Naumovski" has been awarded to the best last year's scholarship holder. This award was named after the late friend and former club president, attorney Mitko Naumovski.
The Rotary Club Zagreb Center was founded in 2000 and its members are women and men, prominent representatives of their vocations, who have gathered around common ideas to help the community, especially the less fortunate ones both in Croatia and in the world. Since its very beginning, the Rotary club Zagreb Center has been recognising and addressing needs of the local community and has organised numerous humanitarian projects in various areas.
"Over the years, the occasional help to young and talented students and the awareness of the growing youth vulnerabilities prompted members of the club to set up the Gordan Cacic Scholarship Fund in 2007 with one scholarship holder, who was then a high school student and is now an assistant at a faculty of the University of Zagreb.
At the beginning, we only gave scholarships for high school students because that period in children's lives is very important, perhaps the most crucial for their future and their career. Although given the sometimes difficult financial situation, the system should help the high school students. The members of the club have noticed that the high schoolers have very limited access to scholarships. That's why we wanted to right this wrong," says Gordana Buljan Flander, president of the club.
During 11 years of its existence, Rotary Club Zagreb Center had the opportunity to support a total of 168 excellent young people, which with this year's 31 scholarships awarded, the total number rises to 199. The funding is raised by contributions from members, donations, and by organizing various events that strive to make a breakthrough and positively affect the lives of young people.
The World Polio Day has also been marked at the ceremony with the club donating money to the to the Polio Plus Rotary International's Polio Plus fund.
