26th Zagreb Marathon Announced

By 19 September 2017

The Marathon will take place on October 8, starting from Ban Jelačić Square.

Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandić invited all Zagreb citizens to participate or cheer at the city’s traditional race at a press conference held on September 19, 2017, thanking runners for pushing their limits and promoting Zagreb as a city of sports, which indeed it is.

“Zagreb Marathon is a European event, with 2,200 half-marathon and marathon runners from 37 countries, 11,000 participants in all races, we can prove that we have created a brand that will soon have 15-20 thousand participants, just as other European capitals,” the Mayor said.

Many well-known runners from Croatia and abroad are expected to participate in this year’s Marathon, especially because it will be the location of 2017 Balkan Marathon competition and Croatian team championship.
The start of the race will be Ban Jelačić Square, 10 a.m., and application submissions will close on October 1. There will be three categories – half-marathon, marathon and citizens race, as well as a children’s race (grades 1 – 6) on October 7 at 10 a.m.

All participants who finish the race will get a medal designed specifically for the occasion, featuring Zagreb’s most famous landmark. They will also get a T-shirt with the race’s logo and a starting package containing many useful items for runners.

Children from SOS Children’s Village will participate in the children’s race. Zagreb Athletic Association has started a cooperation with them as part of their “Be Proud Of Yourself” project. The organisers have prepared special presents for children from SOS Children’s Village, and part of the participation fee proceedings will be used for obtaining the necessary sports equipment for SOS Children’s Village.

On October 8, 10 a.m. – 3.30 p.m., the following roads will be closed for traffic: Ban Jelačić Square, Jurišićeva – Draškovićeva – Vlaška – Maksimirska – Avenija Dubrava – Avenija Dubrava/Poljanice, where the runners will turn back around and head back towards Ban Jelačić Square, continue along Ilica to Ilica/Sveti Duh intersection, and finally go back to Ban Jelačić Square, which will be the finish of the marathon.
