24th Czech Film Week Kicks Off in Kino Europa

By 11 October 2017

Once again, film aficionados and lovers of heartwarming stories and typical Czech humour will be able to enjoy themselves at this year’s Czech Film Week.

This week, Cinema Europa hosts 24th edition of Czech Film Week, which will be held from 10 to 17 October 2017 and will feature six works of recent Czech cinematography.

The event kicked off with the screening of the film Teacher - a disturbing film inspired by true events, which tells a story of the true strength of the human character, directed by the highly-acclaimed and award-winning duo Jan Hřebejk and Petr Jarchovsky. For the role of hated teacher, actress Zuzana Maurery was awarded the Best Actress Award at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival.

The next movie on the repertoire on Tuesday is Angel of the Lord 2, a sequel of one of the biggest Czech movie hits in recent times, is an enjoyable Christmas story about the clumsy angel Petronel and his friend - the devil named Uriaš. Angel Petronel still works at the Gate of the Heaven but thinks he deserves a better job, so the devil begins to persuade him to take the apple out of the Tree of Knowledge, making him know everything that God knows and thus get the credit he deserves. In their quarrel the apple falls on the Earth, so the two of them go to Earth to get it back.

Another big hit in Czech cinema will be shown in Kino Europa - Doubles is a movie described as "hilarious crime comedy about two seemingly identical but completely different men," one being a loveable deceiver, and another middle school professor.

This year's repertoire will also feature The Noonday Witch, an atmospheric combination of psychological thriller and horror, inspired by the Czech folklore legend about a mythical being which takes away disobedient children.

Perhaps the most interesting movie on this year's programme is I, Olga Hepnarová, a highly-acclaimed biographical documentary directed by Tomaš Weinreb and Petar Kazda about the last woman who was sentenced to death in Czechoslovakia after killing eight eight people with a truck in the center of Prague in 1973 as an act of revenge for a society that marginalized her entire life. This controversial drama was nominated for up to nine Czech lions, most prestigious film award in the Czech Republic, and was also selected to open the prestigious Panorama programme at last year's Berlinale Festival.

All generations will enjoy an animated fantasy Oddsockeaters made by famous Czech illustrator Galina Míklínova. The movie tells a story of small creatures that live all around us and are responsible for the disappearance of a sock from your money - odd ones! The movie is dubbed by well-known Croatian actors Goran Navojec, Maja Posavec and ŽarkoPotočnjak.

Tickets for the Czech Film Week can be purchased at the box office of Kino Europa o via website www.kinoeuropa.hr  at a regular retail price of 25 kunas (22 kn for children, students and retired) or at a price of 100 kn for a package of tickets for all the movies.
