Celebrate Halloween at Zagreb ZOO

By 27 October 2017

Visit the ZOO and carve Halloween pumpkins for your favourite animals!

It’s no secret that we love Zagreb ZOO and zookeepers who keep coming up with new ways to entertain the animals (and visitors) and seem like they genuinely enjoy doing it.

The ZOO is a perfect spot to go to on weekend, but this weekend is probably one of the best opportunities to go there because you'll get a chance to do something for the animals, too!

One of the most popular programmes at the ZOO is Bundevijada (Pumpkin Fest) – visitors and ZOO inhabitants get a chance to celebrate Halloween together.

On Saturday, October 28, visitors will be able to carve pumpkins at the Sichuan Pavilion at the ZOO 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. and then the carved pumpkins will be given to various animals at the ZOO 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Some pumpkins will be filled with treats for the animals, while others will be carved in a special way, so that the animals can move around and explore them as much as possible.

This is part of the Enrichment process - a very important activity taking place every day at the ZOO for the animals' wellbeing. You've probably seen various objects inside the animals' habitats when you visited the ZOO, like balls or plastic bottles. They are not there by accident - animals are given various objects that stimulate them and encourage behaviour typical for their species. Enrichment can be done in various ways, including sound and smell stimulation, when sounds and smells they would encounter in nature are presented to the animals. Enrichment is sometimes connected to food as well, it can be presented in different forms or hidden so that the animals would use all their senses to find it, as they would in the wilderness.
