ZET to Introduce Free Wi-Fi in All Trams and Buses by End of April

By 10 February 2018

The project announced in 2016 is finally getting implemented in public transport

ZET will introduce free WiFi in all trams and buses in Zagreb by the end of April, reports Zagreb.info. The pilot programme was introduced back in 2016, followed by a public tender for selection of Internet providers that was launched in October 2017.

The City of Zagreb will invest 25,9 million kuna to modernise public transport and improve the service offered to customers. They are reportedly hoping for this move to be appealing to owners of passenger vehicles as well, and eventually entice them to use public transport instead of cars.

Selected Internet providers are thus contractually obliged to introduce the service in 142 trams and 213 buses operating in Zagreb in the following 90 days. The basic condition they need to fulfill is making WiFi equally available in all vehicles operating in public transport, regardless of their location - namely, to ensure a tram passenger at Jelačić Square has an equally good service at their disposal as one riding a bus in the outskirts of the city.

The contract has been signed for a period of four years, enabling all citizens using ZET services in Zagreb, Velika Gorica and Zaprešić to browse various sites on the way to their destination. Hrvatski Telekom was selected to introduce the service in Zagreb's trams in collaboration with Storm Computers, with the latter also teaming up with Vip to introduce WiFi in buses. The contract obliges the providers to make the service available to at least 75 passengers in trams with a capacity of 200 passengers; buses with a capacity of 60 will have WiFi available to at least 45 passengers, while smaller buses with a capacity of 45 will offer a quality service to at least 30 passengers at any given moment.

The service will be available 24 hours a day throughout the entire year. Once they have registered and connected to the network, users will be able to spend 30 minutes online before they are asked to log in again.
